What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Sand Casting?
Sand casting is one of the common metal fabrication techniques, and the casting parts can be used in various industries. Additionally, it can be used on a variety of materials including aluminum, iron, brass, and more. Their advantages and disadvantages are compared as follows.
Advantages of sand casting:
1. Economical.
The castings used in the casting process require extremely low cost sand to make the castings without the need for other similar casting processes, such as die casting, to be done with large machinery. It is the most economical processing technology.
2. Flexibility.
By weight, we can make castings ranging from a few ounces to hundreds of pounds. In terms of the complexity of the design, it can be used to make simple designed parts, and it can also make various castings responsible for the design.
3. Time-saving.
If you need to obtain small batches of castings in a short period of time, then sand casting is undoubtedly your first choice. Because it has a shorter mold time compared to other casting techniques.
Disadvantages of sand casting:
1. Less accurate.
The entire process of metal casting is basically done by hand, and each process cannot be controlled very accurately.
2. Need more surface treatment.
Castings are made in sand moulds, so we need other post-processing processes to make them.
3. Low strength.
Unlike die casting, sand casting is to pour molten metal material into a sand mold, not under pressure. Therefore, the strength that its castings can withstand is lower.
