Vacuum Casting Plastic

A type of manufacturing technology that converts liquid into a solid prototype using vacuum is termed vacuum casting technology. Unlike other prototyping processes, you are required to perform the whole manufacturing operation at the right temperature. Vacuum casting is mostly considered to be a part of rapid prototyping.

Generally, the material is heated for its liquidation sale. Once it is converted into liquid, it is then inserted into a mold to give it a proper shape and structure. To ensure high quality, the master mold should be manufactured in an ideal way. Master mold can be perfectly created using different processes such as Stereolithography etc.

Apart from being useful for manufacturing metallic prototypes, vacuum casting is a wonderful process for manufacturing plastic prototypes.

1. What Are the Main Reasons for the Popularity of Vacuum Casting?

The popularity of vacuum casting manufacturing technology is dependent on several factors.  Similarly, vacuum casting has been used in China for a long time by Chinese manufacturers and suppliers.

One of the main reasons behind the popularity of vacuum casting at such a level is its faster production and greater work accuracy.

· Highly Précised Process

Precision is also the key factor that gives the vacuum casting technology an upper hand over the other manufacturing technologies used in China. The prototype created using vacuum casting technology does not look like a prototype. Instead, it looks like an actual product that contains a lot of details.

This capability of adding a lot of details to the prototype makes the vacuum casting technology much popular among the suppliers and manufacturers of China.

Figure 2 - Vacuum Casting Plastic

Figure 2 – Vacuum Casting Plastic

· Vacuum Casting Is Cheaper

Price is something that is always considered by manufacturers before manufacturing any product. If we talk about the charges, everyone wants to get the best quality manufacturing service at the least possible price.

Here the good news is that by using vacuum casting technology, you won’t be charged much higher for manufacturing as compared to the other technologies in the market of China and the rest parts of the world. The reason for the low cost of vacuum casting technology is that this process uses silicon for the production of their molds. Most of the other manufacturing technologies use expensive metals for their manufacturing. On the other hand, if we talk about Silicon, so it is much more affordable than the other metals that are normally used.

· Best Quality Prototypes

Vacuum casting technology is considered to be this much popular by today because it allows you to use diversified types of materials in manufacturing. This kind of flexibility is a great way to manufacture the products with perfect quality using the best and high-quality materials.

Whether you use plastic as a whole in the manufacturing process or make use of some metal with plastic, you will always get the perfect prototype having a rigid shape and structure.

Figure 3 - Producing Prototypes Using Vacuum Casting

· Speedy Process

One of the main factors that make the people of China like vacuum casting is that this is always a speedy process. With vacuum casting technology, you can easily manufacture a large number of products in the least amount of time. Those products that require waiting for several weeks can be easily manufactured in only a few days if you use vacuum casting technology. Such faster working with greater effectiveness makes vacuum casting to be one of the highly liked technology by the manufacturers and suppliers of China.

2. What Products Can Be Manufactured Using Vacuum Casting Technology?

Figure 4 - Plastic Manufacturing Using Vacuum Casting

Figure 4 – Plastic Manufacturing Using Vacuum Casting

Vacuum casting technology is useful for the manufacturing of different types of plastic products that may range from plastic bottles to packing materials. Some of the main products that are usually manufactured using this technology in China are given as under.

· Food Packing

Generally, the food packing materials are manufactured using this technology by the manufacturers of China.  The reason for using this technology for food packing is that it has higher production in speed. Therefore, proves very beneficial to produce bulk packing items easily.

· Commercial Items

There are a lot of other commercial items that are manufactured using vacuum casting technology. Among them, the products that are used highly include mobile covers, glasses, watches, and key chains, etc.

This helps the small business owners to sell these items, along with their primary business.

· Powder Substances

Generally, the products that are usually manufactured by playing with the powder are also manufactured using vacuum casting technology. Among them, some of them include detergents, soups, and cosmetics substances.

3. Why Can Vacuum Casting Also Be Called as Urethane Casting?

Some people call the vacuum casting technology “Urethane Casting technology.” The main reason behind this is that their mold is made from urethane material. In some cases, it is also made up of other materials, but still, most of the time, it is manufactured using Urethane, that had made people call it Urethane Casting.

4. What Are the Working Processes of Vacuum Casting?

The process of vacuum casting is simple, as injecting a liquefied material into the mold of a particular shape and structure. Once the liquid acquires its shape, it is then passed through other processes to create a final product or a prototype of a substance.

If we talk about plastic casting using vacuum technology, so that can be manufactured in the best way using the vacuum casting technology. The following are some of the main steps by which material passes to become a regular prototype or a final product.

· Creating A Model

The first step for the manufacturing of a product using vacuum casting technology is the creation of a model. The model is created in the 3-dimensional form of the final product that we expect from the vacuum casting machinery to manufacture. After the creation of the model, it is scanned by a high technological laser scanner so that any faults that are present in the model could be spotted and hence removed.

· Creation Of The Design Pattern

After the successful creation of the 3D model of the product, the next step is to create a design pattern that allows a manufacturer to prepare a mold for that particular pattern. Normally, this pattern is created using CAD software and then given a physical form to it.

This pattern is also called the master pattern, as it is considered to be the core resource for the production of the final product using vacuum casting technology.

· Creation Of The Mold

By using the silicone and the master pattern, a rubber mold is created. The master pattern is inserted into a vacuum space around which the area is filled up with silicone. After further actions on the silicone, the mold is created. After its creation, it is kept inside an oven for about 12 hours.

After 12 hours, the mold is ready, and the manufacturer can use it to manufacture the final product.

· Injecting The Liquid Material

After the mold gets successfully created, then the desired material that manufacturers want to use is injected into the mold. If a manufacturer wants to produce a plastic product, he has to insert the liquefied plastic in the mold.

Mostly, the material that is added for the manufacturing of ordinary prototypes is polyurethane resin.

· Production of The Final Product

When the liquid is added to the mold, the mold is inserted into the vacuum in the machinery. After further processing on the liquid inside the mold, the product becomes ready, and one can then separate the product from the mold.

5. Do Some People Dislike Using Vacuum Casting Technology For Manufacturing?

Yes, some people do not like to use vacuum casting technology for the manufacturing of their products. There are several reasons behind such opinions of the public. Among them, some of the main reasons are given as under.

  • The vacuum casting may sometimes disappoint the manufacturers in terms of their accuracy. Some other manufacturing technologies, such as CNC, are considered more accurate than vacuum casting. That’s why people usually prefer to use those technologies for their manufacturing.
  • One of the other reasons includes the inability to create sharp edges. Even if your mold contains sharp edges that are to be included in your product, there are still chances that the sharp edges will be converted into round ones in your final product.
  • Vacuum casting doesn’t provide you all the necessary features for the manufacturing of your product. That’s why sometimes you will be needing cores for getting the other features.
  • Usually, during manufacturing, you may notice that the outer part of the product will be prepared accurately. However, there may be faults in the internal parts. This happens during shrinkage in the process of vacuum casting.

All of the above-mentioned points are some of the main reasons why some people do not prefer vacuum casting technology for their manufacturing. However, if we talk about the production of prototypes, so for that purpose, vacuum casting technology is an ideal one. This is because this technology will make you spend the least and also you will get all kinds of your desired results.

6. What Can Materials Be Used In Vacuum Casting?

Figure 7 - Vacuum Casting Prototyping

Figure 7 – Vacuum Casting Prototyping

There are several different types of materials that you can use in vacuum casting technology for the manufacturing of your products.  Choosing the right type of material in manufacturing can be highly rewarding in terms of providing you the best possible results.

Some of the most suitable materials that can be used in vacuum casting machinery include rubbers, plastic, and resins. You can also make use of other materials like glass for manufacturing your products, but that will not give you such a best result just as the above-mentioned materials.

Vacuum casting is an old manufacturing technology that doesn’t allow much diversification in selecting the best suitable material. However, if you want to manufacture small-sized products in a large quantity, then vacuum casting technology may be the perfect option for you.

7. Why Vacuum Casting Considered highly efficient for Large Quantity Production?

Figure 8 - Vacuum Casting Plastic Prototypes

Figure 8 – Vacuum Casting Plastic Prototypes

There are several reasons based on which we can say that if you are going to manufacture your products in a larger quantity, then the ideal manufacturing technology for you is that of vacuum casting. If the total number of products that you want to manufacture is more than 10, you would be charged much higher due to the manufacturing cost on the production of all those products.

However, if you use the vacuum casting technology for manufacturing of large quantity of products, you will not be charged that much higher as compared to that in the other manufacturing technologies. This factor of cost makes vacuum casting technology to be the best for manufacturing your products in large quantities.

Not only the charges but the other reason is that the molds of we can use vacuum casting molds for the production of almost 100 to 200 more products. You can manufacture 100 to 200 products using the same mold that positively affects your manufacturing expenses. Similarly, the vacuum casting technologies being simple, are the fastest technologies that allow you to manufacture your products much faster than other technologies.

Due to this reason, you can easily manufacture a large number of products faster. According to some manufacturers and suppliers of China, the vacuum casting technology is even faster than CNC machining, which is already having an outstanding position among the manufacturing technologies.

8. What Are The Properties Of The Products Manufactured Using Vacuum Casting Technology?

Figure 9 - Manufactured Products Of Vacuum Casting Plastic

Figure 9 –  Manufactured Products Of Vacuum Casting Plastic

The products that are manufactured using vacuum casting technology are rigid and flexible. According to some experienced manufacturers and suppliers of China, vacuum casting products show greater resistance to heat and fire. The following are some of the other properties of the vacuum casting products.

· Hardness

The products manufactured using vacuum casting technology are harder and rigid in their structure. Some manufacturer has witnessed that this technology is not much beneficial for creating a sharp design.

This is due to the reason that the sharp designs wear out during the manufacturing process due to pressure on the semi-solid material. But once the product is manufactured, it has a hard and rigid structure.

· Heat Resistance

Heat resistance is something that needs greater attention during the product manufacturing process. A product that does not show much resistance to heat can easily get damaged when exposed to greater temperature.

Using vacuum casting technology, you can easily manufacture products that provide greater resistance to heat.

Figure 10 - Plastic Prototype Manufacturing

Figure 10 – Plastic Prototype Manufacturing

· Fire Resistant

Apart from being resistant to heat, the vacuum casting products are also resistant to fire. If in case these products are exposed to fire, they won’t easily catch fire. This property makes vacuum casting products to be the best ones.

9. What Are the Industries That Uses Vacuum Casting Technology?

Many industries use vacuum casting technology for the manufacturing of their products. Among them, the most common industry is that of the plastic industry. The manufacturers of China for manufacturing plastic products consider vacuum casting. Below is the list of some other industries that use vacuum casting technology for the manufacturing of their products.

· Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is one of the top industries that use vacuum casting technology for manufacturing the different parts of their cars. Modern-day cars are equipped with modern gadgets and technologies that are manufactured using vacuum casting techniques.

The automotive industry focuses on manufacturing the best cars at the lowest prices. For this purpose, they use plastic where the parts are not exposed to high pressure. Those plastic parts are mostly manufactured using vacuum casting technology.

Figure 11 Production Of Parts

Figure 11 Production Of Parts

· Production of Medical Instruments

The medical instruments are also manufactured using vacuum casting technology. Among the medical instruments, small medical instruments are produced using this technology. For large and complex instruments, other technologies such as CNC machining are used.

This is because the CNC technology is highly accurate, and medical devices need to be manufactured in a highly accurate way.

· Computer Parts

Computer parts are also manufactured using Vacuum casting technology. The computer manufacturing industry manufactures a bulk number of computers per day. And in that case, the ideal manufacturing technology for them is that of vacuum casting.

· Scientific Devices

Many scientific devices are manufactured using vacuum casting technology. They may include measuring gadgets to large scientific machinery used in spacecraft. Vacuum casting is today highly used for manufacturing aerospace instruments and machinery.

10. What Are the Basics That Differentiate Injection Molding from Vacuum Casting?

Figure 12 - Urethane Vacuum Casting

Figure 12 – Urethane Vacuum Casting

Vacuum casting is normally the process of manufacturing a large number of products. Similarly, injection molding also, for most of the time, follows the same principles of vacuum casting, but that is used for smaller quantity products manufacturing.

In vacuum casting, the mold is filled with liquefied material. After that, the space inside the mold is made a vacuum that gives a specific shape and pattern to the liquefied material and shapes it into the shape that the mold has. On the other hand, injection molding is simply the injecting of liquid in the mold and letting the liquid cool down to get solidified, and that’s all.

If we talk about the manufacturing cost, so vacuum casting technology is much cheaper than injection molding. But here the thing is that the manufacturing companies will only accept your order if you want them to manufacture a large number of products for you using vacuum casting technology.

On the other hand, you can use injection molding technology for the manufacturing of small-sized products in lower quantities. The manufacturing companies will accept your order for the small number of products using injection molding.

11. Why Is Injection Molding Not That Effective as Vacuum Casting?

Several factors give an upper hand to the vacuum casting technology over the injection molding. Among them, the main factor is that of cost. The charges on injection molding may not be that much greater for you in case of low volume production.

But if in case you are going to manufacture large quantity products, you will be charged much higher as compared to that in vacuum casting. The following is the list of some of the main factors that make injection molding to be less effective than vacuum casting.

Figure 13 Injection Molding Process

Figure 13 Injection Molding Process

· Poor Plastic Designs

The tools that are used in injection molding are moistly prepared with aluminum or steel. This makes the manufacturing of complex designs in plastic very difficult. You can manufacture plastic products with injection molding technology, but if your product contains complex designs, then you should avoid using injection molding.

This is the point where vacuum casting technology comes in. although vacuum casting also is inefficient in manufacturing complex designs still, this technology is far better than that injection molding for manufacturing complex designs in plastic.

· Slow Process

The manufacturing process of injection molding is quite slower than that of vacuum casting. So if you are planning to manufacture a large number of products, you will have to wait for a longer time to let your products get manufactured.

But vacuum casting technology is much faster than injection molding. Thus allowing you to manufacture your large quantity products easier and faster.

· Inability To Manufacture Large Products

Another thing that makes injection molding to be ineffective as compared to vacuum casting is that in injection molding, the manufacturing of large products is very much difficult. In fact, you cannot even manufacture any kind of large product. If still, you want to use injection molding for manufacturing large products, you will be required to arrange additional instruments for getting your work done using the injection molding technology.

This will also cost you much higher. On the other hand, if we talk about vacuum casting technology so using that, you can easily manufacture large parts of the machinery or large products at a lower cost. This inability of the injection molding to produce large products makes it ineffective as compared to that of vacuum casting technology.

12. Can The Customers Directly Use the Vacuum Casted Products?

Yes, all the products that are manufactured using vacuum casting technology can be used directly by the customers after they are tested. With vacuum casting technology, you can not only produce a prototype of a product, but you can also manufacture the final product.

However, that is only recommended if your product is not going to be so much complex. Otherwise, there is a chance that you will be disappointed by the lesser accurate manufacturing of the sharp designs in your product.

You can also produce a test product and launch it in the market. You will do this to check how the customer will react to the actual product with greater functionalities if manufactured and launched in the market. This step may be very fruitful for you to get knowledge of the exact product that a market needs.

13. Why Should You Use Vacuum Casting for Rapid Prototyping?

There are a lot of manufacturing technologies that are great to be used for rapid prototyping. The one that is highly recommended is that of vacuum casting technology. Here are the main things that make vacuum casting the best for rapid prototyping.

· Quality

Quality is the thing that most of the manufacturer are conscious about. If your product or prototype lacks quality, you cannot make it successful and reachable to more customers, and your already existing customers will also quit using your product. Similarly, if your product is that of high quality, it will be liked by most of the customers.

For higher quality of product, it is better to manufacture the best quality prototype, and vacuum casting does the same. That’s what makes vacuum casting the best for rapid prototyping.

· Testing

The second thing that makes vacuum casting to be the best one is the testing. With vacuum casting, you can manufacture your prototype in such a way that it is flexible to make changes in that prototype if needed.

This flexibility allows you to see the bigger picture of what the customers need and help you fulfill their needs by manufacturing the best quality product for them.

· Inexpensive

As we know, vacuum casting is inexpensive manufacturing technology. And that’s why considered to be the best for rapid prototyping. For creating a prototype of your products, you should not make huge spending on only the prototype. Instead, you should manufacture a prototype that can give an idea of the practical use and need of that particular product to the public.

Vacuum casting, using its simple techniques and processes, allows you to not spend a huge amount of money on creating your prototype. Whether you use vacuum casting plastic or use any other material for manufacturing your prototype, vacuum casting will always be the best option for your rapid prototyping.
