3D prototyping is a vast technique that involves a series of methods and tricks in it. Manufacturers and suppliers throughout the world depend upon this technique for multiple reasons. It is divided into various further methods that can help you produce quality prototypes.

One of its well-known methods is SLS Rapid Prototyping. It is a technique that is neither old-school nor unreliable. It’s probably one of the best methods of 3D Printing right now. If you are looking to find further details about this topic and how you can use it, this FAQ Guide is your best shot at it.

SLS Prototyping is an essential method in terms of producing prototypes of standard quality. It allows you to produce bulk quantities of sturdy products. No matter how intricate the designs are or how complex the geometry is, the SLS method is going to make everything just right!

 Process of SLS Rapid Prototyping

Figure 1 – Process of SLS Rapid Prototyping

So, let’s get started with our SLS Rapid Prototyping facts and details without wasting any further time. After going through this guide, you will know if this is the processing method for manufacturing your products or not.

1.What Type of Prototypes Can You Manufacture Through SLS Rapid Prototyping?

Before introducing the method, we would like to show you the results it can reach. SLS Rapid Prototyping is known for its complex and quick production. If you hire the best manufacturers or have the best equipment, you can produce almost every delicate prototype with SLS.

SLS Rapid Prototyping does not make it difficult for you to manufacture prototypes. It does not require supports or more manual labor upon the prototypes. So, it would be a superior process method to produce functional and mechanically reliable prototypes of complex shapes and geometry, etc.

Selective Laser Sintering

Figure 2 – Selective Laser Sintering

If you have a specific prototype in mind about which you are confused, you can contact the manufacturer in China. Tell them the details about your product and how you want it to get manufactured. They will surely help you out. Moreover, the company will also let you know if you can get the prototype manufactured using SLS Rapid Prototyping or not.

2. How is a Part Produced in SLS Rapid Prototyping?

This method works by producing the parts layer-by-layer. A polymer powder is used as a conversion material in this process. This powder is fused together into solid parts to manufacture quality prototypes.

You might have heard about powder fusion processes. SLS is one of them. Like SLA Rapid Prototyping, it also uses a laser. That laser is used to transfer high energy into powder molecules. This high energy is transformed into strong and sturdy parts.

Usually, thermoplastic polymers are utilized as the raw materials in the SLS Rapid Prototyping. It is because these polymers are present in a granular form/shape. Their conversion into prototypes is easy and dependable. They are converted into solid layers. A layer over another layer is kept producing until the part is complete.

3. Is SLS Rapid Prototyping Good for Small Businesses or Large Productions?

The best thing about this method lies in the fact that it can be used for every type of production. Either you run a small business and require small batch production or vice versa, SLS Rapid Prototyping can do wonders for you.

Nesting is a process in which large batch production is carried out. Through SLS, you can do this. Moreover, if you are looking forward to the production of few small prototypes, or just a single prototype, SLS can do that too.

This method does require investment according to your production ratios, but the results are always worth it. The accuracy and precision are never lost in any part if the right manufacturer produces it in the right way. People have found this process super-reliable in terms of large functional prototypes. But other than that, SLS is great for small productions too.

SLS in Automotive Industry

Figure 4 – SLS in Automotive Industry

The complexity of the prototypes can easily be achieved even in large productions through SLS Rapid Prototyping. So, if you are considering it for your small business, you are all set to go. And suppose you want to carry out a large production of a lot of prototypes. In that case, SLS Rapid Prototyping is still a great option to achieve excellence.

4. How is the SLS Rapid Prototyping Process Carried Out?

The process of SLS Prototyping is not complex but takes time to be carried out. It starts with heating up the raw material and the functional base area. But the temperature is kept low. Low enough so that it does not reach the melting point of the functional polymer present in it.

The powder is then spread out over the entire functional area, and the process moves further. Here comes the role of the laser that uses carbon dioxide for sintering the powder. This laser is poured onto the raw material, and it then fuses all the materials together.

SLS Methods

Figure 5 – SLS Methods

After completing this said layer, the process continues with re-spreading the powder on the build platform. This keeps happening until the entire prototype is built. But here, the process isn’t completed.

After the prototype is done, it is taken out, and post-processing work starts. This process in SLS Rapid Prototyping is delicate as it can also result in the breaking of prototypes. This process includes the cooling down, washing, and such similar stuff that can be explained further, too.

5. How the Post-Processing in SLS Rapid Prototyping Works?

The post-processing in SLS is kind of hard as it involves delicate steps. First, the product is washed and cleaned thoroughly. This not only enhances the look of the product but also makes it shinier and captivating. Different techniques and methods can be used for this process.

Dyeing or spraying, different techniques are useful to wash the prototype. But as the product is in its initial state, it is necessary to handle it with care. If you don’t do that, it certainly results in damaging the prototype.

SLS Post-Processing

Figure 6 – SLS Post-Processing

Other than the cleaning and washing, various things for enhancing their functionality can also be done. You may also opt for applying a watertight coating or something like that. It can make the prototype sturdier and easily manageable.

6. What Are the Benefits You Can Get If You Use SLS Rapid Prototyping?

The Selective Laser Sintering Method is highly reliable in all terms. It produces great quality and standards of prototypes. The benefits you can get from this process are unlimited too. However, they come with a price, but the price is totally worth it.

Before selecting any process, you must be aware of its pros and cons so that you can use it accordingly. So, if you are looking for some of the main advantages of SLS Rapid Prototyping, some of them are explained here.

  • No Support System Required

You don’t need to put any support in the manufacturing of prototypes during the SLS process. Unlike other methods, it carries out the process on its own. So, you don’t have to go through the typicality and difficulty of using other support parts. All you need to do is let the machines work on their own and process you a very fine prototype.

  • Suitable For All Prototype Sizes

The SLS Rapid Prototyping has another benefit over other methods. That is the production of all batch sizes. No matter if you are going for a small-scale prototype production business or in need of large-scale batch production, SLS can do it all for you.

Figure 7 – Prototype by SLS Rapid Prototyping

  • Great To Produce Functional Prototypes

Not all 3D Printing methods are good for producing functional prototypes. You need a good and dependable technique for that purpose. SLS Rapid Prototyping is just that. It can produce a good range of functional prototypes that can be used for all mechanical means.

  • Good For Complex Structures

The method of the Selective Laser Sintering process involves good quality materials and techniques. This makes it possible for you to produce intricate designs. No matter how hard the structure or the shape of the prototype is, you can easily manufacture it using the SLS Rapid Prototyping. This is also because it requires no support.

  • Strong and Sturdy Prototypes

The layers produced have strong adhesion and bond between them. This increases the bond strength to a great extent. Different materials used in SLS Prototyping have different tensile ratios and strengths. You can use the one that offers similar properties that you require for your business.

  • Easy to Dye and Color

If you are familiar with the finishing of SLS prototypes, you must know that they have grainy outlooks. This grainy surface is due to the porosity of SLS prototypes. This porosity makes the prototypes easily involved in liquids and easy to dye too. So, if you are looking for prototypes consisting of a long range of colors, SLS Rapid Prototyping is a great technique to opt for.

7. What Are the Common Materials Used in Production of Prototypes Using SLS Rapid Prototyping?

There are not uncountable raw materials’ ranges present for SLS Rapid Prototyping, but still, there is a lot for you to choose from. The most commonly used materials are thermoplastic polymers in this process.

Some of the most common materials are described below.

  • Polyamide 12 (Nylon)

This is a material with good qualities and can be used to produce quality prototypes. It offers a great chemical resistance too. So, if you’re looking for some large functional prototypes, it can be a good choice to make. But remember that the prototypes produced by PA-12 have a rough surface finishing.

  • Polyamide 11 (Nylon)

This polyamide raw material is great for producing elastic and flexible prototypes. Moreover, its isotropic behavior makes the prototypes much sturdier, even if they are flexible to a great extent.

SLS Rapid Prototyping Products

Figure 9 – SLS Rapid Prototyping Products

  • Polyamide-GF (Glass-Filled Nylon)

Filled or Glass-Filled Nylon offer great stiffness and temperature resistance. It is good for prototypes that have to go through wear and tear processes or work. They are hard and stiff, so you can rely upon them for tough working chores. Its stiffness is because of its anisotropic qualities. So, if you want flexibility in your prototype, this material is not the one at all.

  • Polyamide-FR (Carbon Fiber-Filled Nylon)

This PA-FR is a lot similar in properties to the PA-GF because of its anisotropic behavior. Therefore, it can also not produce flexible prototypes. However, if you are looking for stiff, heavy, and strong prototypes, the Polyamide-FR is going to be a great choice for you.

  • Alumide

This 3D Printing material is great for producing prototypes with metal touches and appearance. Manufacturing a metallic prototype with a 3D model can be a lot more fun if your product can look exactly the same.

8. Why Should You Not Select SLS Rapid Prototyping for Business?

Like all other methods, where there are pros, there are cons too. In SLS Rapid Prototyping, there are some things that you must know before selecting it for your business. Maybe there are some qualities you would like to have in your prototypes, but SLS is not able to provide them.

You should know about them beforehand so that you would not have to face difficulty later on. Some of such reasons are as follows,

  • Takes Longer TimeAs the SLS Rapid Prototyping technique is delicate and tough, it requires a longer time for production too. Producing layer by layer is not something that can be done in a few hours. It requires time, and sometimes, it can be a lot. If you want quality, you would need to give it time. But if you are in need of fast deliveries, the SLS method might not be the one for you.
    • Grainy Surface Finish

The default surface that SLS Rapid Prototyping produces is grainy and porous. If you require a smooth finished surface, you would have to use other methods in the post-processing of prototypes. This requires more time, investment, and energy too.

    • Prototypes Can Shrink

The parts produced via SLS Rapid Prototyping can shrink or warp with time on cooling. The dimensions that you decided can contract and become smaller. An approximate 3% shrinking ratio is a must in SLS. But this can be overcome if it is kept into account during the production.

    Nylon Production in SLS

  • Figure 10 – Nylon Production in SLS
    • Extra Powder Fusion Can Happen

You might call it over-sintering. It is supercritical because it may result in losing the intricate details and exact geometrical structures of prototypes. It can happen upon the powder exposure to extra heat. But if you hire the best manufacturer or prototype supplier, they’ll know how to do this thing right.

    9. In What Industries SLS Rapid Prototyping Can Be Used?

The accuracy ratios of rapid prototyping have made it useful for various fields and industries. You can easily make complex designed prototypes using the SLS technique. That is why the industries prefer using it. Different famous applications of SLS Rapid Prototyping are as following.

    · Casting Industries

The industries that manufacture investment casting products prefer this method greatly. It is because you can produce investment casting products of almost all designs through SLS Rapid Prototyping. A large array of investment casting patterns can also be produced through it.

    · Automotive Parts

As you know, the materials used in SLS Rapid Prototyping are capable of producing strong and still parts. This quality of SLS is found to be useful in the automotive industry. The parts required in this industry should always be functional prototypes and sturdy. You can easily manufacture them through the SLS technique.

    Automotive Parts by SLS

Figure 11 – Automotive Parts by SLS

· Wind Tunnel Projects & Others

The SLS Rapid Prototyping is helpful in the wind tunnel programs too. Other than this, you can also apply this technique for manufacturing products in the aerospace industry, electronics, and medical industries, military uses, etc.

10. Can You Use SLS Rapid Prototyping for Personal Usage?

There is no problem with using this technique for personal use. But doing this is not preferred. The SLS Rapid Prototyping requires big machinery and a big budget too. Using it just for a simple residential purpose can cause you a lot of money that would go in vain.

Not only the SLS machinery is super-expensive, but its technique and materials are delicate to use too. Therefore, it is not suitable for personal use. Still, if you think you can work this thing out, you can opt for the technique without any hesitation. Or you can also contact a good manufacturer in China to help you out.

11. Which SLS 3D Printers Should I Use?

The printers and machines used in this process are very expensive but useful too. These printers vary in terms of production volume, material usage, temperature control, and printing processes. You can get the one that suits you the best according to your requirements.

For instance, if you want to carry out large batch production, then the best printer for you will be the Traditional SLS Printers that are used in industries. Because these printers cost a lot, they are not used by local manufacturers or suppliers. Only big industries that need to produce bulk productions have these printers.

They do need not only large space to set up but also require special industrial power to work. So, if you have all these resources, then buying this machine can do wonders for you. If not, then just contact a reliable manufacturer of China to carry out the production for you.

SLS 3D Printer

Figure 12 – SLS 3D Printer

Another well-known type is the Benchtop Printer. It costs less and does not require a lot of regular maintenance too. This is a Formlabs Fuse 1 printer that has the capability to produce compact and dependable prototypes for you.

Its production volume is not as much as the traditional SLS Printers, but they are one of the kinds. If you are not looking for something for large batch production, these printers can rock it for you. They do not need much space and are also eco-friendly to use.

Don’t worry about the quality of parts, as it is never compromised in the SLS Rapid Prototyping process. The average printing prototype capability of this device can be around 165 x 165 x 300 mm. So, if you want something around this volume, the Fuse 1 SLS Printer will be a great choice for you.

12. Why Are SLS Printers Too Costly to Buy?

The machines used in SLS Rapid Prototyping are indeed very costly. But this cost is not a waste. They are expensive because these machines work by using high-quality laser beams and raw materials.

Moreover, the complex designs made using these machines require heavy, reliable machinery. Then to fulfill such kind of machinery requirements, the SLS Machines and printers are made with high costs and investments.

The parts used in these machines are of very high quality. This quality is what makes you spend a lot on the machines. Of course, you would not want to compromise on the quality of your prototypes either. Therefore, spending this right amount is definitely worth it!

13. Is SLS Rapid Prototyping Better Than CNC Machining?

Both the methods have their own advantages. In some things, 3D printing techniques are more reliable than CNC Machining. While we take into account the size limits, designs, and shapes, CNC would be better than the SLS Rapid Prototyping technique.

Some of the major differences between both methods are discussed below. These differences will surely help you select the better method for your prototype productions.

  • Labour Requirements

If we talk about the Labour requirements for both the processes, then SLS Rapid Prototyping will win at the end of this debate. It is because there is no Labour or tough working required in any 3D Printing method, including the SLS Rapid Prototyping.

Whereas in CNC Machining, skilled operators are a must. Otherwise, the manufacturing process and the post-processing process cannot be carried out at all. Even if you have the best machines, operators are still required to choose between different options to produce the perfect required part.

SLS Working Environment

Figure 13 – SLS Working Environment

  • Prototype’s Quality and Shape

The parts produced using the SLS Rapid Prototyping method can have complex geometries and larger volumes. But they are limited to a point. However, the complex designs produced in the SLS method are much better than the ones produced in CNC Machining.

But if we talk about strength, tolerance, and sturdiness, CNC Machining would be better. If you are looking for parts with high tolerance, CNC Machining should be your choice. But if you want better geometry and required layer thickness, SLS Rapid Prototyping should be preferred.

  • Maximum Production Volume

Without getting into long debates, the simple thing is, CNC Machining is a lot better at producing large batch productions than any other method. No matter if your large production or just a great number of parts, CNC machining is a lot better than SLS.

  • Investment Requirements

Well, now we have landed on the main point. The costs usually depend upon the amount and volume of your parts. If we talk about low volume production, the 3D Printing methods, including SLS, would be a great choice. It will cost less and will help you produce the best quality prototypes with details.

However, for large productions, CNC Machining will be a great choice. CNC Machining can provide you quality prototypes in large production. But there are many factors in both processes that can make either of the techniques more expensive than the other. To know the exact rates and expenses, you should contact a manufacturer company.

  • Eco-Friendly Method

Without any doubt, the SLS Rapid Prototyping is the most eco-friendly technique you can ever use. It does not produce any mess, neither while producing the parts nor after the production. Thus, if you are looking for an environmentally friendly method, this is definitely the one.

In CNC Machining, the cutting of metals and the use of complex materials create a whole lot of mess around. Even in the post-processing time in the CNC Machining method, you’d have to face numerous messy methods. A lot of material is left over, which needs to be cleaned or disposed of.

So, the better method depends upon your requirements. But we hope that these above-stated differences and reasons would have helped you greatly in choosing the right method for yourself.

14. Which Parts Are Easier to Produce Through SLS Than SLA?

The bonding and strongness of SLS prototypes are better than the ones produced through SLA. That means making the same sized products can take different time durations. Thus, such parts that are required early are better to produce through SLS Rapid Prototyping.

The raw materials used in SLA are hard to produce and manage. The whole the ones in SLS are easier. It is because of the difference in brittleness ratios between both kinds of raw materials.

Parts by SLS

Figure 14 – Parts by SLS

Plus, if you want smooth surfaces, you should opt for SLA without second thoughts. You can get smooth surfaces through SLS Rapid Prototyping too. But that requires processes like metallic coating and water tightening to be done. Otherwise, the surface would remain grainy or porous by default.
