2. How is a Part Produced in SLS Rapid Prototyping?

4. How is the SLS Rapid Prototyping Process Carried Out?

  • Polyamide 12 (Nylon)

  • Polyamide 11 (Nylon)

  • Polyamide-GF (Glass-Filled Nylon)

Filled or Glass-Filled Nylon offer great stiffness and temperature resistance. It is good for prototypes that have to go through wear and tear processes or work. They are hard and stiff, so you can rely upon them for tough working chores. Its stiffness is because of its anisotropic qualities. So, if you want flexibility in your prototype, this material is not the one at all.

  • Polyamide-FR (Carbon Fiber-Filled Nylon)

This PA-FR is a lot similar in properties to the PA-GF because of its anisotropic behavior. Therefore, it can also not produce flexible prototypes. However, if you are looking for stiff, heavy, and strong prototypes, the Polyamide-FR is going to be a great choice for you.

  • Alumide

8. Why Should You Not Select SLS Rapid Prototyping for Business?

Like all other methods, where there are pros, there are cons too. In SLS Rapid Prototyping, there are some things that you must know before selecting it for your business. Maybe there are some qualities you would like to have in your prototypes, but SLS is not able to provide them.

You should know about them beforehand so that you would not have to face difficulty later on. Some of such reasons are as follows,

  • Takes Longer TimeAs the SLS Rapid Prototyping technique is delicate and tough, it requires a longer time for production too. Producing layer by layer is not something that can be done in a few hours. It requires time, and sometimes, it can be a lot. If you want quality, you would need to give it time. But if you are in need of fast deliveries, the SLS method might not be the one for you.
    • Grainy Surface Finish

    The default surface that SLS Rapid Prototyping produces is grainy and porous. If you require a smooth finished surface, you would have to use other methods in the post-processing of prototypes. This requires more time, investment, and energy too.

    • Prototypes Can Shrink

    The parts produced via SLS Rapid Prototyping can shrink or warp with time on cooling. The dimensions that you decided can contract and become smaller. An approximate 3% shrinking ratio is a must in SLS. But this can be overcome if it is kept into account during the production.

    • Extra Powder Fusion Can Happen

    You might call it over-sintering. It is supercritical because it may result in losing the intricate details and exact geometrical structures of prototypes. Its production volume is not as much as the traditional SLS Printers, but they are one of the kinds. If you are not looking for something for large batch production, these printers can rock it for you. They do not need much space and are also eco-friendly to use.

Don’t worry about the quality of parts, as it is never compromised in the SLS Rapid Prototyping process. The average printing prototype capability of this device can be around 165 x 165 x 300 mm. So, if you want something around this volume, the Fuse 1 SLS Printer will be a great choice for you.

12. Why Are SLS Printers Too Costly to Buy?

The machines used in SLS Rapid Prototyping are indeed very costly. But this cost is not a waste. They are expensive because these machines work by using high-quality laser beams and raw materials.

13. Is SLS Rapid Prototyping Better Than CNC Machining?

Both the methods have their own advantages. In some things, 3D printing techniques are more reliable than CNC Machining. While we take into account the size limits, designs, and shapes, CNC would be better than the SLS Rapid Prototyping technique.

  • Labour Requirements

If we talk about the Labour requirements for both the processes, then SLS Rapid Prototyping will win at the end of this debate. It is because there is no Labour or tough working required in any 3D Printing method, including the SLS Rapid Prototyping.

Whereas in CNC Machining, skilled operators are a must. Otherwise, the manufacturing process and the post-processing process cannot be carried out at all. Even if you have the best machines, operators are still required to choose between different options to produce the perfect required part.

  • Prototype’s Quality and Shape

The parts produced using the SLS Rapid Prototyping method can have complex geometries and larger volumes. But they are limited to a point. However, the complex designs produced in the SLS method are much better than the ones produced in CNC Machining.

But if we talk about strength, tolerance, and sturdiness, CNC Machining would be better. If you are looking for parts with high tolerance, CNC Machining should be your choice. But if you want better geometry and required layer thickness, SLS Rapid Prototyping should be preferred.

  • Maximum Production Volume

Without getting into long debates, the simple thing is, CNC Machining is a lot better at producing large batch productions than any other method. No matter if your large production or just a great number of parts, CNC machining is a lot better than SLS.

  • Investment Requirements

Well, now we have landed on the main point. The costs usually depend upon the amount and volume of your parts. If we talk about low volume production, the 3D Printing methods, including SLS, would be a great choice. It will cost less and will help you produce the best quality prototypes with details.

However, for large productions, CNC Machining will be a great choice. CNC Machining can provide you quality prototypes in large production. 14. Which Parts Are Easier to Produce Through SLS Than SLA?

The raw materials used in SLA are hard to produce and manage. The whole the ones in SLS are easier. It is because of the difference in brittleness ratios between both kinds of raw materials.

Plus, if you want smooth surfaces, you should opt for SLA without second thoughts. You can get smooth surfaces through SLS Rapid Prototyping too.
